Casey Scieszka picks 5 movies to pair with ‘The Fountain’

In Pairings, artists and creators pick the movies that complement their latest work.

Casey Scieszka is the author of To Timbuktu and the new novel The Fountain, which publishes on March 17. We asked Casey to pick a few movies that pair well with The Fountain.

Tuck Everlasting

I read Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt when I was in 5th grade—the book upon which this movie was based—and the whole question of “what would you do if you could choose to live forever?” delighted and haunted me so much I finally had to write my own grown-up version, a.k.a. The Fountain!

Dirty Dancing

My book takes place in the Catskills and I don’t think there’s a more famous movie that takes place in the Catskills than Dirty Dancing. This one is a classic for good reason!

Death Becomes Her

My main character Vera cannot age or die, and during the writing process I had to sort out answers to many kinda gruesome “but what if this happened to her body, would she still survive that?” questions, and I thought frequently of the final image in Death Becomes Her at the bottom of the stairs... Not to mention the pool scene! (IYKYK)

Interview with a Vampire

Vampires are such classic immortal characters. I loved this book and loved this movie just as much. Kirsten Dunst’s genius is on full display here, and at only 11 years old! The way she conveyed the tragedy inherent in her immortality is simply devastating.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Sometimes movies about immortality or time travel can feel like a Tour of History’s Most Famous Moments. This story of how two lovers have naturally drifted apart to such distinct little corners of the world (Tangier, Morocco and Detroit, Michigan) felt so quiet in a—as funny as this is to say—realistic way. Bonus points for the amazing cinematography and those blood popsicles.
