7 times Steven Spielberg should have won Best Picture

Assorted Flavors features listicles and other movie-related goodies.

It’s hard to believe that Schindler’s List is the only Steven Spielberg film to win Best Picture. Here’s how I’d change that—if only in my dreams.

Jaws (1975)

As excellent as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is, c’mon—it’s Jaws

E.T. (1982)

Sorry, Gandhi. Your subject did lots of great things for the world, but beating E.T. isn’t one of them.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Hot take: this is the best Indiana Jones movie, and by awarding Driving Miss Daisy the Academy chose... poorly.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Harvey Weinstein’s hatchet job on this epic in favor of Shakespeare in Love is very, very low on his list of sins, but it’s still there.

Minority Report (2002)

Chicago was hot stuff at the time, but this sci-fi noir still sizzles decades later.

Lincoln (2012)

Sure, Argo is good, but have you seen the acting GOAT portray the presidenting GOAT in a film by the directing GOAT?

The Fabelmans (2022)

Everything Everywhere All At Once was undeniable this year, but there’s no denying the power of Spielberg’s deeply personal auto-biopic.
