The Best Movies of 2023, According to the Year’s Rising Stars

We reached out to several exciting up-and-coming performers from 2023’s movie slate to ask for their own favorite film of the year (besides their own) and why they loved it.

Armen Nahapetian
(Beau Is Afraid)

Armen’s pick: Gran Turismo

“Archie Madekwe’s performance as Jann Mardenborough was phenomenal! The racing scenes had me on the edge of my seat every time, and the cinematography was amazing. There was also a balance of emotional scenes that made me feel closer to, and want to root for Jann even more!”

Luke Islam
(Theater Camp)

Luke’s pick: Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé

“More than a concert, it was a journey through her performances, her life as a mother on a world tour, and the challenges as a woman of color in the music industry. It showcased her talents and struggles, making it deeply personal and emotionally rich. The film’s visual splendor, especially her iconic stage outfits, was mesmerizing. Beyoncé’s authenticity and dedication shone through, making it more than just entertainment.”

Farrah Mackenzie
(Leave the World Behind)

Farrah’s pick: Barbie

“My three favorite movies this year were Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Talk To Me. But I’d have to pick Barbie. I think Barbie is a movie that displays what it means to be a woman in today’s society. This humorous, surreal, fun movie conveyed a beautiful message that deserves to be heard and understood by the entire world.”

Jake Ryan
(Asteroid City)

Jake’s pick: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

“This year was packed with a lot of great movies. But Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was probably my most anticipated film, and boy did it deliver! I was dazzled by the voice performances, and mystified by the animation and the millions of little details they managed to cram in. It made me leave the theater craving more. Hopefully they take as much time as they need to complete the second part.”

Kristen Cui
(Knock at the Cabin)

Kristen’s pick: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

“I think my favorite movie is The Super Mario Bros. Movie because in the end Mario and Luigi get the star from Bowser. Not just that, I think that the part when Peach shows Mario the obstacles was really cool, and when Luigi gets to the Dark Lands, I was so startled that there were goosebumps all over me!”
