The Best Movies of 2022, According to the Year’s Rising Stars

We shared our favorite films of 2022, but we also wanted to hear from the people who helped make the variety of films that defined the year.

So we reached out to several exciting performers from this year’s movie slate to ask them for their own favorite film of 2022 (besides their own) and why they loved it. Enjoy!

Jaylin Webb
(Armageddon Time)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

My favorite film of the year is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever because it represents Africa to its fullest glory. It provides a nice touch of comfort and strength after dealing with such a loss. The Afro-futuristic setting that makes Wakanda what it is and the black power throughout the entire film inspires me so much.

Sidsel Siem Koch
(Speak No Evil)

All Quiet on the Western Front

A lot of films were great this year, but with no doubt the German film All Quiet on the Western Front was my favorite. It made my stomach hurt and the cinematography and acting was amazing.

Matthew Patrick Davis
(Barbarian)

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Besides Barbarian, I think my favorite film this year was something completely different: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. I knew it’d be funny, but I was so pleasantly surprised with how deep and poignant it was, and that it was about grief and loss and loneliness. In addition to Jenny Slate’s vocal performance, Isabella Rossellini’s was just delightful. This animated tale of a 1-inch shell surprisingly moved me — I filled my mask with tears and snot. (TMI?)

Everything Everywhere All At Once

My favorite film of the year must be Everything Everywhere All At Once! This film had me go through a rollercoaster of feelings, a way that no other film had done before. It had me feel feelings I’ve never felt before. I didn’t understand the film, the film understood me.

Gregory Mann
(Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio)

Thirteen Lives

My favourite film of 2022 was Thirteen Lives about the incredible rescue mission of a football team of boys around my age, who were trapped in a cave in Thailand during freakish weather. It was so thoughtfully done. I know there was a happy ending in real life, but the film was intense and full of suspense - I was on the edge of my seat throughout.

Dakota Beavers

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

I walked into Black Panther: Wakanda Forever not knowing what to expect. I walked away feeling quite moved by the spirit I felt on this project. Letitia Wright did wonderfully as did the rest of the cast!
