Sweet 16: A Movie Q&A with ‘Magnetosphere’ Director Nicola Rose

Nicola Rose is a film director and writer from New York City, whose second feature film Magnetosphere is out now on VOD. Nicola took time to answer 16 rapid-fire questions about the movies and movie experiences that have made her life sweeter.

1. First movie crush

Roger Rees as Nicholas Nickleby in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of the book.

2. Current movie crush

Audrey Tautou and Marion Cotillard. I haven’t actually switched teams, but my answer stands.

3. A movie scene you’ll never shake

The goodbye song scene in The Fox and the Hound. Please do not ask me to elaborate.

4. A movie scene that never gets old

The opening of Moonrise Kingdom, set so perfectly to “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”

5. Favorite movie theater

Pathé Parnasse on the rue d’Odessa in Paris. It’s where I first saw Moonrise Kingdom, which was the film that made me want to become a director.

6. Theater snack of choice

Popcorn, preferably white cheddar flavor.

7. A performance that makes you LOL

Fiona Gordon, Dominique Abel and Philippe Martz in the Belgian movie L’Iceberg.

8. A performance that makes you cry

All the kids in the final scene of the 2018 Oscar-winning Hungarian short Sing (Mindenki). I absolutely bawled in the theatre because of how funny, unexpected and perfect it was.

9. Favorite childhood movie memory

Watching Fantasia, Mary Poppins, 101 Dalmatians, or The Lion King over and over and over, because they were four of the first movies I saw.

10. A movie you’ll defend forevermore

Any respectably made movie by an indie filmmaker on a small budget that people rag on just because it has a small budget. It’s elitist and snotty. Stop it.

11. Rainy day movie

The Intouchables.

12. Director who always wows you

Hayao Miyazaki.

13. A movie quote you use on the regular

The disembodied voice intoning “EEEEEEVILLLLL” from The Simpsons Movie. It just works on so many levels.

14. Favorite movie GIF:

15. Movie you want played at your funeral

Also Moonrise Kingdom. I am not a diehard Wes Anderson fan, but I’d kill to have made that movie.

16. Magnetosphere double feature

Matilda.
