Review: ‘Never Not Yours’
2024 / Dir. John Klein & Stephen Kniss
☆ 3/5
Watch if you like: The Family Stone, awkward family meals, and hangout movies.
Creating authentic sibling chemistry on screen between non-related actors is hard to do, but John Klein and Steve Kniss’s feature Never Not Yours accomplishes that from the jump in a road trip sequence featuring three thirty-somethings (Angela Morris, Josh Bywater, and Timmy H. Barron) on their way to their family cabin that crackles with comedic energy while setting the stage for the coming drama. I wish the rest of the movie consistently lived up to this introduction, though its priorities are the siblings processing their parents’ divorce announcement and the resulting emotional turmoil. Family dramedy is a time-tested genre, and Never Not Yours dutifully hits many of its hallmarks with an earnestness that honors the messiness of being human.
