Drew Barrymore’s Most Memorable Movie Hairstyles

Assorted Flavors features listicles and other movie-related goodies.

As longtime Drew Barrymore fans and creators of the How Do You Drew podcast, we’ve seen her sport a variety of onscreen hairdos.

She has often said that she always starts with the hair when developing her characters, which have included dirty blonde pigtails (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), jet black tresses (Best Men), and bright orange Shirley Temple curls (Home Fries). These are our picks for her most memorable ones.

Boys on the Side

Free spirited Holly is bubbly and flirty, and her adorable short blonde curls match her personality. Described by Drew herself as “woo woo bouncy”, this iconic hairstyle had teen girls everywhere trying to duplicate it. Plus it introduced the world to Drew’s signature daisies in the hair, which would continue to be synonymous with her personal style for several years after.

Poison Ivy

As the titular Ivy from the wrong side of the tracks, Drew sported a bad girl perm, dyed blonde with dark roots. As the plot unfolds and her character evolves, she begins to wear it blown out or in sophisticated up-dos. Throughout it all, she perfects the quintessential ‘90s side part flip.

Charlie’s Angels

In order to play the character of bad-ass crime-fighting Dylan, Drew went red hot with her tresses. When she wasn’t in one of her many disguises, it was often styled with fun textured pieces to illustrate her character’s scrappiness.

50 First Dates

For the part of Hawaii-based Lucy, Drew went blonde again for the first time in years. Her character’s beach waves complement the locale and eventually start to be done in a variety of styles once she learns she’s been reliving the same day over and over.

Scream

This is the only hairstyle on our list that was actually a wig, but it’s too classic to be excluded! Drew’s actual hair was dyed jet black at the time of filming, and the powers that be vetoed it for the role of Casey Becker. So instead Drew opted for the now-famous blonde wig, which she called “this great little Sandra Dee with the bangs and a little flip.” The wig was also inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer’s ‘do in Scarface.
