‘It’s a Sports Movie’ and Other Takeaways from ‘Theater Camp’

Here are our first impressions of Theater Camp, a musical mockumentary out in theaters July 14!

1. Never bet against Booksmart alums

One of the many gifts of 2019’s brilliant teen comedy Booksmart was its introduction to a murderer’s row of fresh talent: Skyler Gisondo, Diana Silvers, Mason Gooding, Eduardo Franco. But stealing the show here in Theater Camp is the film’s director and star Molly Gordon and fellow Booksmart alum Noah Galvin. Clearly having the time of their lives, they continue to shine on like we knew they would.

2. Paul Simon’s “The Obvious Child” is always a good idea

Looking to make your movie at least a half star better? Sprinkle in Paul Simon’s jubilant, life-affirming song “The Obvious Child.” There is no film too small or too large (especially a summer camp film) that couldn’t be lifted to new heights by this absolute gem. Supreme choice.

3. It’s a sports movie

And that’s a compliment. Though athletics and the arts are often (ridiculously) held in opposition, this story of a ragtag group of misfits and their flawed leaders overcoming conflicts and obstacles to make it to the triumphant final performance shows how great stories transcend genre. There’s even montages!

4. This is the Ben Platt we needed

Hollywood has tried and tried to transfer Ben Platt’s Dear Evan Hansen star power from the stage to screen but never quite found the right match. Even the Dear Evan Hansen film adaptation couldn’t get it done. But something about this film feels like the exact, correct lane for Ben Platt the movie star—dry, funny, self-aware. Excited to see what’s in store for him next.

5. Here’s to the misfits

This is a warm-spirited story about a group of outcasts who have found their place among like-minded people, and that beating heart is always noticeable between the loving jabs and the witty satire. It’s not afraid to look inward and laugh at itself, but also doesn’t forget to underline the vital importance of social community and safe self-expression.

6. Musical theater is a magic trick

The magic of musical theater never ceases to be amazing, whatever the context. To go from absolutely nothing to a collection of songs, complex choreography, manufactured sets and costumes, all combined into a compelling and entertaining story? Sign us up every time.

7. The kids are (more than) all right

Cheers to this ensemble cast of young performers who manage to sell both the over-the-top satire of showbiz life and the earnest appreciation of doing what they love. It’s a powerful example—especially for LGBT+ kids—that deserves to be celebrated.

8. Something for everyone

There's perhaps nothing more "theater kid" than harmonizing to a generator's electric hum during a power outage. While much of the comedy in the film relies on its audience having some knowledge of musical theater, that isn’t all that’s on offer. Theater Camp is funny throughout, and still plenty accessible to those who don’t know their flats from their sides.
